LDPR Predicts Coup

MOSCOW -- Ultranationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky said Friday that a military coup is about to take place in Russia, probably by Sunday, and that a state of emergency will be declared and parliamentary elections canceled, Interfax reported.

The leader of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia told a news conference that his party would send a message Friday to the government with a warning that coup preparations were under way, the agency reported. The LDPR would demand urgent measures to prevent it.

Zhirinovsky outlined two possible coup scenarios: In the first, angered armed forces would rise in revolt; in the second, several major terrorist attacks amounting to "a dozen Budyonnovsks" would be started in Russia either by Dzhokhar Dudayev's men or by Russian secret services.
