Kashmir General Strike

SRINAGAR, India () -- Kashmiris took part in an unprecedented general strike Wednesday against a militant group fighting for Kashmir's independence, closing cities to protest their execution of a Norwegian hostage.

On Sunday, the decapitated body of Hans Christian Ostro was found with a note from the Al-Faran group threatening to kill the other captives its is holding -- an American, two Britons and a German -- in two days.

In Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu-Kashmir state, a general strike called by a coalition of 32 pro-rebel political or religious groups closed government offices, banks, schools and most of the city's shops and businesses.

The four remaining hostages were presumed to be alive even as the deadline passed the director of information in Jammu-Kashmir state, who had contact with the kidnappers Wednesday.
