IMF Praise for Belarus

WASHINGTON -- The International Monetary Fund has praised Belarus' economic policies and signaled its willingness to support the former Soviet republic next month with a loan worth about $300 million.

IMF Deputy Managing Director Stanley Fischer said Thursday the former Soviet republic had made "very considerable progress" in stabilizing and reforming its economy over the past few months.

Fischer said Belarus' economic program is a "strong one."
