Belarus: Back to Soviet Textbooks

MINSK, Belarus -- The president of Belarus has ordered schools to begin using Communist-era history books instead of the new one published after the 1991 Soviet collapse.

President Alexander Lukashenko "has carefully studied the newly issued textbooks and expressed his dissatisfaction with an overly nationalistic interpretation of some historical facts," his spokesman, Marat Bushenko, said Wednesday.

The president gave the Education Ministry a year to prepare new textbooks and ordered them to use Soviet-era books in the interim. School officials reportedly fear they won't have enough of the old books to go around.

Lukashenko openly favors uniting Russia and Belarus and the revival of the Soviet Union.
