All Blacks Ride Lomu To Victory

SYDNEY, Australia -- Center Frank Bunce scored a try in each half and wing Jonah Lomu was rampant as New Zealand downed Australia 34-23 in the 100th Bledisloe Cup rugby union match between the arch rivals.

Flyhalf Andrew Mehrtens claimed a try and kicked a penalty and three conversions, while Lomu and fellow wing Jeff Wilson also scored tries on Saturday.

Lomu was a constant threat with his pace and power and was involved in four of his team's five tries. He now has scored nine tries in his nine test appearances.

"We were Lomu-ed for sure," said Australia captain Phil Kearns. "He was the difference between the two teams."

The New Zealanders retained the cup which they gained by defeating Australia 28-16 in the first test in Auckland a week ago and swept the series 2-0.

It was the 68th win for the All Blacks in the century of games between the southern hemisphere powers, while Australia suffered its fourth loss in its last six tests.

The Australians led 13-12 at halftime but were overwhelmed in the second half. "I don't think there is anyone like him [Lomu]," said Australian coach Bob Dwyer.

The match may have been the last played between the teams under amateur rules. There were reports before the game that many of the players are considering defecting to a breakaway professional series.
