Embezzler Gets Death

TEHRAN -- A court in Tehran has sentenced a man to death and jailed two others for life in what is believed to be Iran's biggest bank fraud case. A ruling released Tuesday said the court passed the death sentence on Fazel Khodadad, the main defendant in the case involving the embezzlement of about 65 billion rials ($21.7 million at the official rate) from state-run Bank Saderat. Morteza Rafiqdoust and bank employee Abutaleb Ebrahimi were sentenced to life imprisonment and ordered to pay fines. ABC Apologizes WASHINGTON (WP) -- The American Broadcasting Co. has publicly apologized to two large tobacco companies for allegations the network made last year about the ways they control nicotine levels in cigarettes. In response to the rare public apology broadcast Monday night, both Philip Morris and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. dropped their libel suits against ABC. Philip Morris had sought $10 billion in damages. Reynolds sought an unspecified award.
