Victory Boosts Tories

LONDON () -- British Prime Minister John Major's victory in this month's challenge for the Conservative leadership has boosted his party's popularity, embarrassed pollsters -- who issued a wrong result -- have said.

They said the Conservatives, trailing the opposition Labour party, were now 15 percentage points behind rather than an unchanged 27, as they had originally reported when the poll was published in Wednesday's Guardian newspaper.

The director of the ICM polling institute said a massive clerical blunder had hidden the dramatic boost to the Conservatives' fortunes since the leadership election.
