U.S. Bull-Runner Dies

PAMPLONA, Spain () -- A 22-year-old American was gored to death Thursday on the seventh morning of the famed San Fermin bull run, the first death in the festival in fifteen years.

Matthew Peter Tassio died of cardiac arrest at Navarra Hospital shortly after one of six fighting bulls gored him in the abdomen during the frenetic 825-meter sprint down cobbled streets from the corral to Pamplona's bullring.

Injuries are frequent in the bull runs held at 8 a.m. each morning in the eight-day festival in honor of Pamplona's patron saint.

But Tassio's death is the first since 1980, when two Spanish runners were killed. There have been 12 fatal gorings since 1924.
