Swiss Squad Draws Red Star for Cup

GENEVA, Switzerland -- Former European Champions' Cup winner Red Star Belgrade will make its return to European competition after a three-year exile with a preliminary round UEFA Cup match against Neuchatel Xamax of Switzerland.

Red Star will host Neuchatel Xamax in the first leg on Aug. 8, with the return leg in Switzerland two weeks later, according to Wednesday's draw.

The 1991 champion was banished from international competition in the 1992-93 season because of UN sanctions against Yugoslavia but has been readmitted this year and was widely considered the team to avoid in the draw.

The Yugoslavs won the prestigious title as the best club team in Europe in the 1990-91 season with a penalty shoot-out victory over French club Marseilles in the final.

Paraguay suffered an early fright before fighting its way to a 3-2 win over Venezuela and qualifying for the quarterfinals of the Copa America in Maldonado, Uruguay.

The Paraguayans needed an 82nd-minute goal by defender Carlos Gamarra on Wednesday to finally overcome the team universally regarded as the worst in the tournament.

Venezuela has won only one game this decade and has only registered one victory in the history of the Copa America.

The pitch at Montevideo's Centenario stadium continued to worry Copa organizers as Uruguay's game with Mexico was postponed Wednesday.

The first round Group A match, due to be held Wednesday night, will now be played Thursday afternoon because heavy rain washed out the field, organizers said. (AP, Reuters)
