Subs to Lay Cable

MOSCOW () -- With demand down for spying, Russian scientists are planning to use nuclear-powered submarines to lay underwater communication cables rather than hunt for enemy vessels, Itar-Tass said Tuesday.

The Malakhit naval enterprise in St. Petersburg is designing a conversion plan for the powerful nuclear subs, which will be used to put down cables in the Arctic Ocean, the news agency reported.

The first project involves an underwater communication line that would link Russia's northern Kola peninsula and Canada, the agency said.
