Soros Stops Minsk Aid

MINSK, Belarus () -- The U.S.-based Soros Foundation has said it is no longer issuing aid grants in Belarus because the former Soviet republic's leadership had refused to honor a pledge to waive taxes and import duties.

Spokeswoman Veronika Begun said Wednesday the fund had made the decision because it had been omitted from an official list of charities and its activities were therefore subject to a 40 percent tax.

"This violates an agreement reached by George Soros and [Belarussian President] Alexander Lukashenko," Begun said. "If this problem is not dealt with, it will call into question the fund's future activity in Belarus."
