Rain, Floods Sweep Through Japan

TOKYO -- Torrential rain swept through large parts of central and northern Japan on Wednesday, flooding hundreds of homes, triggering landslides and disrupting road and rail traffic.

Rainfall of up to 30 millimeters an hour soaked much of the northern half of Honshu, Japan's main island, the meteorological agency said. It issued a warning of heavy rains and floods.

About 2,500 people were evacuated to local community centers in central Japan, police said.
