Malaria in Voronezh

MOSCOW () -- At least 107 people have contracted malaria in the central Russian city of Voronezh in the first outbreak of the mosquito-borne disease there for more than four decades, Itar-Tass said Thursday.

Twenty-two new cases were diagnosed Wednesday, the news agency said.

A team of experts has been sent from Moscow to Voronezh, 450 kilometers south of the capital, to help with the outbreak, which Itar-Tass said was made worse by the partial draining of the city's artificial lake, leaving a boggy environment ideal for breeding mosquitoes.
