Journalists Sentenced

BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan () -- Two journalists have been sentenced to prison for what a court called "libelous publications insulting the honor and dignity" of Kyrgyzstan's president, Interfax has reported.

President Askar Akayev sued the newspaper, Respublika, after it claimed he had a villa in Switzerland.

The news agency said the paper's editor in chief, Zamira Sydykova, and her deputy, Tamara Slasheva, were sentenced to 18 months each Tuesday, with a year suspended. They also were banned from working as journalists for two years, the report said.
