Exploding Corpse

MOSCOW () -- Twelve policemen and criminal specialists were injured when they examined a booby-trapped body in a northern suburb of Moscow, the district prosecutor said.

Anatoly Chizhov, the prosecutor of Mytishchi district, said Tuesday that the officers were lured to the body by an anonymous phone caller who told police that a body was lying near a country road and then promptly hung up.

"When our experts turned the body to inspect it, a powerful blast went off and those surrounding the corpse were all knocked off their feet," Chizhov said.

Five people were seriously injured and hospitalized, including the deputy chief of the militia department and the chief investigator of the local prosecutor's office, he said. He added that the body was placed over an RGD-5 hand grenade with its fuse removed and ready to explode the moment the body was lifted. Chizhov said this could be arranged only by someone "who had been dealing with grenades before."

Chances of finding the anonymous caller are slight because the call was made from a public phone, Chizhov said.
