Duma Blasts France

MOSCOW () -- The State Duma on Thursday joined the chorus of protests against France's decision to resume nuclear testing this fall.

The lawmakers unanimously passed a statement saying Russia is "seriously concerned" with President Jacques Chirac's decision to hold a series of eight nuclear tests at the South Pacific atoll of Mururoa in September.

The Duma asked Chirac and the French parliament to drop the plan, saying, "Russia, as a Pacific country, believes that such tests are dangerous for the fragile system of coral reefs."
