Commersant Daily to Close For 'Break'

One of Russia's most influential business newspapers, Commersant Daily, announced Tuesday that it would suspend publication for the first five days of August due to a "technical break."

"It seems like things are settling down little by little," said a notice published on the front page of Tuesday's edition of the newspaper. "The government, having gone through parliamentary hearings, went back to its day-to-day business. The parliament ... is going on vacation. The president is getting well and the dollar rate will need to look for other reasons for its fluctuations.

"So it's possible to relax a bit -- that's what we recommend you do, too, since August is the best time for it. Commersant Daily is going on a little break -- just for five days, from August 1 until August 5."

Although the paper has given much more prominent display to business news than the political events mentioned in the notice, an advertising manager for Commersant Daily insisted that the break was just for technical reasons.

"It is a purely technical break," Tamara Klushina said. "I think that's a perfectly adequate explanation."

The notice in Commersant Daily said that the break would be used to make certain changes in the newspaper, which would be announced later. Klushina refused to elaborate on the changes.
