China Denial Urged

WASHINGTON () -- Jesse Helms, chairman of the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has urged senators to deny China's trade privileges, calling for a "decisive reaction" to its deteriorating human-rights record.

Helms, a North Carolina Republican, and Democrat Russell Feingold of Wisconsin told their colleagues in a letter Wednesday that they had introduced a resolution to show disapproval of President Bill Clinton's decision to extend China's most-favored-nation status for another year. A similar resolution is pending in the House.

Past attempts to block MFN for China have failed in the Senate.
