Charges Protested

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East () -- Regional leaders issued a scathing protest against the arrest of a law enforcement officer now kept in a Moscow prison in connection with the illegal ouster of Vladivostok's mayor.

Mayor Viktor Cherepkov was thrown out of his office by riot police in March 1994, after regional governor Yevgeny Nazdratenko accused him of corruption.

Investigators from the prosecutor general's office later discovered that the case against Cherepkov had been falsified.

Last Thursday, Major General Alexander Bondarenko became the fifth person to be arrested in connection with the case.
