Bare-Faced Walesa

WARSAW () -- Poland's President Lech Walesa has shaved off his famous moustache but a senior aide promised Thursday: "It will be back."

Walesa suddenly appeared in public this week bereft of the facial hair which has been his trademark since he led the epoch-making 1980 Gdansk shipyard strike that launched Solidarity and eventually led to the fall of communist rule.

Senior presidential aide Andrzej Zakrzewski said Walesa had removed the whiskers while on holiday and had been forced to interrupt his vacation before they could grow back.
