U.S. Japan Talks: Progress 'Slow but Steady'

GENEVA -- As car-trade talks between the United States and Japan broke for dinner Friday, a U.S. official, who declined to be named, said progress had been "slow but steady."

U.S. spokesman Sheridan Bell said senior negotiators would resume talks later.

"The issues are serious and the deputies [ministers] are engaged in in-depth discussions," Bell told reporters.

Japan's vice trade minister, Yoshihiro Sakamoto, declined to comment.
