Turkmen Plotters Jailed

ASHGABAT () -- The Central Asian state of Turkmenistan has jailed two opposition supporters after a trial in which they were found guilty of plotting to kill President Saparmurat Niyazov, officials said Thursday.

The convictions coincided with third anniversary festivities marking Niyazov's election by a 99.5 percent majority to head the isolated ex-Soviet republic, where he permits no opposition.

Businessman Mukhametkuli Aimuradov was jailed for 15 years, while Khoshali Garayev, a Russian citizen, received 12 years. The two were picked up by the Uzbek security service in Tashkent last October and flown to Ashgabat. An arrest warrant was drawn up a week later, defense lawyers said.
