Tajik Border: 20 Killed

MOSCOW () -- Russian border guards protecting the Tajik-Afghan border killed a group of 20 armed drug traffickers coming from Afghanistan, officials said Thursday.

The incident occurred Wednesday, when border guards attempted to stop a caravan trying to cross the River Pyandzh. The traffickers responded with automatic gunfire, said Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Alyoshin, the border guard troops' spokesman.

In the subsequent fighting, all intruders were killed. It appeared the caravan had carried drugs, Alyoshin said.

There were two other skirmishes elsewhere along the border Wednesday, in which an unspecified number of Islamic fighters were also killed.
