Swede Jailed for Sex With Thai Youth

STOCKHOLM -- In one of the first cases of its kind, a Swedish retiree was sentenced to three months in jail Thursday for having sex with a boy in Thailand.

The conviction for breaking a Swedish law in a foreign country was being watched closely internationally by those who are battling the global child prostitution industry, particularly in Asia.

The man, Bent Bolin, 69, a retired Swedish civil servant, was found guilty of soliciting sex in 1993 with a boy, then 14, while visiting the Thai resort town of Pattaya.

Acting on a tip from Swedish police, Thai police and a Danish film crew raided a hotel room and found the older man and the boy.

The man was charged under a law that allows Swedish courts to try citizens for breaking a Swedish law in another country.

Prosecutors argued that Sweden had an obligation to convict Bolin in the interest of children worldwide.
