Ship Captain Tried

MOSCOW () -- A Russian navy commander is on trial for negligence after an explosion killed seven sailors forgotten in his ship's jail, a newspaper reported.

The military court of the navy's Northern Fleet has accused Vladimir Rudzik, captain of the aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, of "failure to act, resulting in human death." If convicted, Rudzik could face three to 10 years in prison.

The sailors burned to death in a steam explosion while the ship was undergoing repairs in the northern port of Murmansk in February 1994, Izvestia reported Thursday. They had been locked in the ship's punishment cell and were unable to escape when a steampipe burst, causing a fire.
