Shanghai Gets Happy

SHANGHAI () -- Communist Party officials have adopted the title of a recently popular American song -- "Don't Worry, Be Happy" -- as a slogan to boost morale in Shanghai, the Liberation Daily newspaper reported Friday.

The aim of the slogan is to focus officials on what makes people happy in China's largest city, thus checking abuses of power and curbing corruption, the newspaper said.

Slogans are a way of life in China. "Long Live Chairman Mao" was an early favorite; "One Child is Best" encouraged family planning. But none has been quite as snappy as "Don't Worry, Be Happy."
