Redwood Sole Major Challenger

LONDON -- Prime Minister John Major and right-wing former cabinet minister John Redwood were the only candidates when nominations for a leadership ballot in Britain's ruling Conservative party closed Thursday.

The announcement was made by Sir Marcus Fox, chairman of a group of Conservative members of parliament that will be organizing the leadership election.

The internal ballot, triggered when Major dramatically resigned the post a week ago in a bid to reassert his battered authority, will take place next Tuesday.

Major said in an interview with the BBC: "I intend to win with a clear-cut majority. I called the election to clear the air ... and I don't have a shred of doubt that the air can be cleared."
