Juppe Lays Out Budget Proposal

PARIS -- French Prime Minister Alain Juppe announced plans Thursday to fight near-record joblessness and a ballooning budget deficit with job-creation measures, higher sales and profits taxes and spending cuts.

In a mini-budget seeking to meet his new government's priorities on jobs and the budget, conservative Jupp? blended handouts, ambitious targets and tax hikes to finance them, seeking to pacify financial markets by stressing austerity.

He said his government aimed to create 700,000 new jobs by the end of next year.
