Conductor Dies at 94

LONDON () -- Conductor Efrem Kurtz, who came to fame working with American modern-dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and collaborated with some of the greatest names in Russian ballet, has died at the age of 94.

Kurtz, who died Tuesday in London, was born in Russia but spent all his adult life in the West. He studied music at the St. Petersburg Conservatoire, before fleeing to Germany before the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution. Kurtz left Germany for France in 1933 following a tip-off that he was on a Nazi wanted list.

In 1939 he went to the United States and among other pursuits, conducted at the New York Philharmonic.
