CE Honors Kovalyov

STRASBOURG, France () -- The 34-nation Council of Europe on Thursday awarded its human rights prize to Sergei Kovalyov and Swedish diplomat Raoul Wallenberg, missing since World War II.

Kovalyov, a former Soviet gulag detainee and President Boris Yeltsin's former commissioner for human rights, has repeatedly pleaded against Russia's military intervention in Chechnya.

Wallenberg, a diplomat in Nazi-occupied Hungary during World War II, was credited with saving the lives of about 100,000 Jews by giving them passports or hiding them in diplomatic residences.

He was reported missing after Russian forces conquered Hungary from the Germans. The council said he was missing apparently in Soviet prisons.
