Abortion Laws Merged

BONN () -- The Bonn parliament merged the old East and West German abortion laws into an intricate compromise Thursday that settled one of the last controversial issues left unresolved since unification in 1990.

The deal, worked out across political lines and passed by 486 to 145 votes, declared abortion illegal but permitted it in the first three months if a woman first sought counselling.

Under the compromise, which merges the strict Western law with East Germany's abortion-on-demand, counsellors must stress an embryo's right to life but leave the decision to the woman.
