Vatican-Ukraine Talk

VATICAN CITY () -- Pope John Paul and Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma on Tuesday discussed the thorny issue of the return of Catholic Church property confiscated under Communism in the former Soviet republic.

The talks were held at the start of a four-day visit to Italy aimed at consolidating Ukraine's commercial and political links with the West.

Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro-Valls said the talks on relations between the Vatican and Ukraine, which re-established diplomatic links in 1992, centered on property of the Ukrainian Catholic Church which was confiscated by the Communists after World War Two.
