Soros Boosts Scientists' Grant

A recently ended travel program for scientists from the former Soviet Union has received an additional $500,000 grant from billionaire philanthropist George Soros and thus will continue through the end of the year.

"The program is very, very popular and so we asked Mr. Soros to allocate some more money," Tatyana Galkova, a spokeswoman for the Moscow office of the Soros-funded International Science Foundation, said Thursday.

The grant, announced May 4, was matched by a $500,000 contribution from the Russian Fund for Basic Research, an organization financed by the Russian government.

The program, started in April 1993 by the ISF, had sent over 6,000 scientists to conferences all over the world by the time its $7 million in funding was exhausted last month, Galkova said, adding it has received 2,000 applications.

The Conference Travel Grant Program is set to resume later this month.
