Perry Watches Exercises

LVIV, Ukraine () -- The first joint military exercises by U.S. and Ukrainian troops were watched Thursday by U.S. Defense Secretary William Perry and NATO's top military commander, General George Joulwan.

The week-long peacekeeping exercise near Lviv in western Ukraine was designed to improve cooperation in escorting humanitarian aid convoys, distributing aid to refugees, dealing with sniper fire and guarding checkpoints.

"It is very important to train together in the event that we have to work together in joint peacekeeping operations," Perry told Ukrainian Defense Minister Valery Shmarov.

"Peaceshield 95" involves 300 soldiers from the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division in Germany and 300 from Ukraine's 24th Motorized Rifle Division.
