Latvia Bank Crisis Grows

RIGA, Latvia -- The collapse of Latvia's largest commercial bank, Banka Baltija, threatened to claim its biggest political casualty yet Thursday as parliament planned to consider the dismissal of Bank of Latvia Governor Einars Repse.

Baltija and officials started a second day of talks on terms for a state takeover at the same time as opposition and some government legislators said they blamed Repse for the crash.

An opposition motion calling for the dismissal of Repse and his deputy was scheduled to be put before parliament at the end of its afternoon session, though votes are frequently postponed.

Earlier in the day legislators had agreed the appointment of 36-year old Latvian-American Indra Samite as new Finance Minister to replace Andris Piebalgs, who resigned amid the Baltija affair.
