Kiev Gives Crimea Vote Ultimatum

KIEV -- Ukraine's parliament on Thursday gave the legislature in its pro-Russian autonomous Crimean peninsula a week to cancel a referendum in support of its regional constitution banned by Kiev as separatist.

Deputies voted overwhelmingly that they should ask Crimea's assembly to halt the referendum and produce a new constitution respecting Ukrainian law.

A commission was ordered to report back by June 1 on whether Crimean authorities had complied with the order and promised "tough measures" if they had not.
