Georgian Crackdown

TBILISI () -- Georgian soldiers and Interior Ministry troops arrested more than 200 people and confiscated piles of weapons in a weekend crackdown on crime.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said Monday 219 people were arrested, including 32 wanted criminals, as several hundred police and soldiers backed by more than 50 armored vehicles took to the streets Friday.

More than 40 automatic weapons, 9,000 rounds of ammunition, 263 grenades, several machine guns and a light tank were confiscated, the spokesman said. Illegal drugs were also seized and 39 people were arrested on narcotics charges.

Similar large-scale operations have been held in Georgia in the past year in response to an explosion of violent crime and in an attempt to combat armed bands.
