Clinton Nominee Appeals

WASHINGTON () -- President Bill Clinton's nominee for top health policy adviser made a spirited appeal for Senate confirmation, saying confusion over his record on abortions stemmed from "an honest mistake."

Dr. Henry Foster, an obstetrician who has become ensnared in the issues of abortion and personal credibility, appeared Tuesday at a long-delayed Senate Labor Committee hearing on his nomination as U.S. surgeon general.

Foster expressed regret over confusion on the number of abortions he had performed in private practice, but said this had obscured his main record as "a doctor who has delivered thousands of babies."
