Celtics Fire Coach Ford

BOSTON () -- Chris Ford, who headed the Boston Celtics as they declined from the Larry Bird era into mediocrity, was fired after five years as coach. There was no immediate word on a successor.

"There comes a time in a coach's career where there is a point of diminishing returns," M.L. Carr, the team's director of basketball operations, said Wednesday.

As a National Basketball Association coach, Ford had a .542 winning percentage (222-188) in the regular season and a 13-16 playoff record, dropping four of six playoff series. In 1994, the Celtics missed the playoffs for the first time in 15 seasons. They lost in the first round of this year's playoffs to Orlando.
