Belgium Battles Apathy

BRUSSELS () -- Politicians are battling to restore voter confidence and counter disillusion with mainstream parties before Belgium's general election Sunday.

Prime Minister Jean-Luc Dehaene, who has repeatedly appealed to voters not to turn to the far right, said there was a general climate against politicians in Europe that was exacerbated in Belgium due to a string of scandals.

"We are trying to convince people that not all politicians are like that," Dehaene said.

Belgium's two Socialist parties are both involved in a damaging corruption scandal which has already led to the resignation of four ministers.
