MUNICH, Germany () -- The top two seeds in the BMW Open tennis tournament, Boris Becker and Yevgeny Kafelnikov, were both upset in first-round play by unseeded players.

First-seeded Becker, who lost in the finals at Monte Carlo to Thomas Muster this weekend and has never won a major clay-court tournament, lost to fellow-German Hendrik Dreekmann, 7-5, 2-6, 2-6, in one hour 47 minutes Tuesday.

In the other upset, Martin Sinner, a wild-card entry, defeated No. 2 seed Yevgeny Kafelnikov of Russia on Tuesday 6-4, 6-3, in the first major surprise of the $425,000 men's tennis tournament.
