Australians Find Bugs

SYDNEY () -- Australian counterespionage agents have detected a high-tech operation to eavesdrop on their country's overseas mission in Moscow and at least eight other countries, a newspaper said Thursday.

A briefing for senior Australian diplomats in the East Asian region earlier this month reportedly revealed that listening devices, infrared beams, bugs and tiny cameras were used to snoop on Australia's embassies in Moscow and several Asian capitals including Jakarta and Hanoi.

In Moscow, a spokesman for the Federal Security Service said Australia had not accused Russia of spying.

"We certainly do not regard Australia as an enemy or a source of any danger ... So why should we spy on them?'' the spokesman said.
