Apartheid Era Probed

JOHANNESBURG () -- Parliament in South Africa has authorized a commission to dig up the truth about the country's recent bloody past and to grant amnesties.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission was approved Wednesday with only seven no votes from the right-wing Freedom Front Party.

The commission will have power to grant individual amnesties for crimes deemed political committed before Dec. 6, 1993. In addition, it will issue a report on past human-rights violations by the former white government and the anti-apartheid movement.

The bill becomes law after it is passed by the Senate and signed by President Nelson Mandela.
