Maternity Hospitals Shut

KIEV () -- Epidemics and renovations have closed all maternity hospitals in an eastern Ukrainian city, forcing women to travel at least 40 kilometers to give birth, officials said.

Two hospitals in Lugansk, a city near the Russian border, were shut this week after outbreaks of bacterial infections. Three others were closed for repairs.

"This is the fault of city authorities," epidemic specialist Anatoly Dokoshenko said. "We have a very difficult situation. A diphtheria epidemic could break out at any time. Our sewers and water systems are most unreliable."
