Killer With a Cause

MOSCOW () -- An accused serial killer on trial for 19 murders told investigators he wanted to rid society of "good-for-nothing people,'' Moskovsky Komsomolets reported Friday.

Sergei Ryachovsky, 33, whose trial opened this week in a Moscow regional court, could face the death penalty if convicted.

The laborer and would-be author is charged with killing 19 people during a 10-year murder spree in the Moscow region. He was arrested in April 1993.

Ryachovsky is accused of killing one 78-year-old man because he "was criticizing young people.''
