Fishermen to Be Freed

TOKYO () -- Russia has told Japan it will release two fishermen held in detention since last year when their boats were caught allegedly violating Russian territorial waters, the Japanese Foreign Ministry said Friday.

Russian authorities said they would repatriate the two fishing-boat captains May 6. Held in Russia since February 1994, they are the last two Japanese fishermen still detained in Russia.

Japan and Russia have been locked in a dispute over fishing rights near the South Kurile islands off northern Japan.
