14 Take Deathly Plunge

WELLINGTON, New Zealand () -- Fourteen people plunged 30 meters to their deaths Friday when a cliff-side viewing platform collapsed in the remote West Coast region of New Zealand's South Island, police said.

The victims were dashed on rocks at the bottom of a deep limestone shaft where water flows into an underground cavern, according to officials at the Paparoa National Park. It was New Zealand's worst disaster in nearly 30 years.

Police said four people were taken to hospital in the nearby town of Greymouth suffering serious injuries after an arduous rescue operation.

The victims were from a party of students visiting on a geology field trip in the rugged coastal park.
