Winnie Denies Charges

JOHANNESBURG () -- Winnie Mandela headed home Thursday to calls for her sacking from the government after police accused the estranged wife of President Nelson Mandela of bribe-taking and influence-peddling.

Winnie Mandela, the deputy Cabinet minister of arts, culture, science and technology, angrily denied the allegations before leaving Abidjan, Ivory Coast to return to South Africa.

Always a controversial figure, she accused police of trying to discredit her and said she would survive with the help of her supporters.
