Wings Grab the Lead

ST. LOUIS () -- Paul Coffey and Ray Sheppard scored power-play goals 31 seconds apart in the first period and Mike Vernon stopped 22 shots, including a potential game-tying goal with four seconds left as the Detroit Red Wings grabbed the NHL Central Division lead with a 2-1 win over the St. Louis Blues.

Sunday's road win moved Detroit into sole possession of first in the Central, two points ahead of Chicago. St. Louis, which lost for only the second time in eight games, is three back.

Brett Hull scored his league-leading 18th goal for St. Louis, a power-play marker midway through the second period. (For other game results see Scorecard).
