Uzbeks Get Aid Pledge

PARIS () -- Wealthy donor nations and international institutions have pledged more than $900 million in loans and grants to Uzbekistan to help it reform its economy, the World Bank said Thursday.

"Donors' indications amounted to over $900 million," the Bank said in a statement following a meeting in Paris on Wednesday between officials from the former Soviet republic and representatives of donor states and organizations.

The World Bank said the pledges included $45 million for technical assistance -- much of it free advice and help in strengthening the financial sector and money and tax policies.
